Tired feet didn’t deter this month’s featured bride from jumping for joy when she was proposed to by her husband-to-be... and a wonderful wedding at the family’s country house hotel proved to be exactly the day that Harriet and Mark had always dream of...
When and how did you first meet?
Mark and I met when he was the Head Chef at our family hotel. He always had a bit of a 'typical' chef's temper and I seemed to be the only one who would kerb it! Maybe it's because I always gave as good as I got... he's now come to realise that I was always - and remain - right, which is proving good for married life!
When in the relationship did he 'pop the question' How did he propose?
After six years of waiting, Mark and I spent the weekend in London for my birthday. Mark had arranged a lovely surprise; dinner at Marco Pierre White's restaurant.
Unfortunately I had put on my highest heels and we had been walking around London for quite a while, needless to say I might have been just a little bit irritable due to my aching feet!
Mark found this amusing given what he was planning. Upon our return to the hotel he had arranged Champagne whereupon he dropped to one knee and proposed. Instantly my aching feet receded, as did my irritability, and I said yes straight away!
Our first decision was to be married at Caistor's St Peter and St Pauls Church. This particular church has a personal attraction to us; not only is it a beautiful church but it's the church in which my grandparents were married 63 years ago.
I also knew I wanted blue hydrangeas to be part of the floral scheme since these were my great grandma's favourite flower. This in turn helped with the pastel colour scheme.
There was no question as to where we would have the wedding breakfast and reception - from an early age I have been involved with our family's hotel, Stallingborough Grange.
We have been responsible for so many other brides' weddings over the last 22 years that I wouldn't trust anyone else with my special day!
Was planning your big day fraught or enjoyable? Did you both contribute ideas with equal enthusiasm?
I have to be quite honest and say it was both; I cannot claim that for future brides everything will go smoothly, but my advice would be to 'go with the flow.' I think the most enjoyable part was designing my dress with Joanna Leigh - I will miss our little chats and fittings!
Any pre wedding nerves?
I was quite looking forward to the big day, although as the wedding car arrived outside the church, some of my friends and staff from work had gathered to see me arrive and I found this quite emotional, shedding a few tears.
I later found out that Mark was extremely nervous, but found reassurance in having his family and best man with him throughout the morning.
How did it feel to walk down the aisle and take you vows?
I felt very focused walking down the aisle and wanted to get to the end. I didn't really notice anyone in the Church, which might sound strange but I tried not to catch anybody's eye as I knew I would start crying again!
Who did you choose for attendants and why?
Mark and I decided to have my younger sister Beatrice and my cousin Emilia as bridesmaids. One of Mark's closest friends, David was his best man. We also decided that it would be nice for Beatrice to recite a reading during the service; first Corinthians 13 'This I Promise.' George, my younger brother, also read a piece from the bible; John 2 1-11 and during the signing of the register Emilia played Canon by Pachelbel on the violin, which sounded beautiful in Church.
What made you choose your wedding dress, can you describe it?
I knew of Joanna Leigh's reputation from wedding fairs at the hotel so I could think of nobody better to design my dress and the dresses for my bridesmaids.
From the start of the process to all of the fittings and final product, everything was faultless, and Joanna is very approachable and accommodating; she made me feel very special.
Did anything funny or particularly memorable happen, highlights of speeches, special things you said to each other etc...?
Mark described me as a bit of a bridezilla in his speech, which I guess I was from time to time! One of the funniest moments was when my dad announced that as a funeral director he walks down the aisle at least
15 times a week, but that it made a nice change to do so with someone who was alive!
Did you have a honeymoon? If so where, and most importantly, did you enjoy it?
For our honeymoon we went to a family villa in Northern Cyprus. It was so peaceful, just what we needed after planning the wedding.
Any friends or family you'd like to thank?
We'd like to thank mum and dad for enabling us to have such a fantastic day; without them none of it would have been possible. I'd also like to thank my Grandma for making our three-tier wedding cake and my grandfather for assisting in the stirring of it!
We'd also like to thank all our friends and family for joining us on our special day and making it a day we will never forget.
Anyone you particularly want to recommend?
Joanna Leigh Couture, based in Brigg, was fantastic. I could think of nobody better to have designed my wedding dress and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending her.
Cake Creations by Jill Fisher was recommended to me by Joanna. She is a fantastic cake designer and a lovely person to work with. I had an idea of how I wanted our wedding cake to look and she brought it to life.
Carl and Karen of KCT Photography made us feel so relaxed on our day. They arrived at 10.30am and were still there at midnight - they were fantastic. I had given them a long list of photos that we wanted but nothing seemed a problem to them.
Karen also sang at our evening reception; she has an amazing voice and got everyone up dancing. She really added that extra special touch to our Big Day.
We also hired Boris - a 1929 Morris Empire Oxford - from Silver Spirit Wedding Cars. Anne & Graham Lambert were brilliant with time-keeping and worked really well with
Carl, our photographer, as we had three locations where we wanted to have our photographs taken.
Other suppliers I'd recommend include Molly's Flowers in Brigg - Louise was fantastic she helped me and mum with ideas.
Essential Assortments Disco, with Adam knowing just the right songs to get everyone on the dance floor, and Gail Byron-Bates, my hair dresser, who helped immensely on the day not just in doing all our hair but also with dresses and touching-up of make-up after the few tears.
How are you finding married life?
It's lovely... we are both enjoying it and looking forward to our future together and the exciting times to come!
