This month’s groom took pride in his bride with a Jane Austen-themed proposal which would see our featured couple celebrate their day in the beautiful setting of Stoke Rochford Hall...
When/how did you first meet?
Groom's View: We were in Barbados back in 2007, I was on holiday with old friends, and we initially met while staying in St. Lawrence Gap. We got chatting, then kept in touch when we got home - and that's where it all began!
When in the relationship did he 'pop the question?' How did he propose?
Groom's View: I popped the question in August 2009. Zoë loves Pride & Prejudice, so I organised a picnic lunch at Groombridge Place in Kent, which featured in the most recent film. There is a Victorian sunken garden there - and that's where I proposed. It was very romantic.
What were the first things you decided on?
Groom's View: The church and venue were the first things we decided on. We were very lucky, because July is an extremely popular time to get married, and a lot of venues we spoke to were already fully booked. Stoke Rochford Hall - luckily - managed to fit us in which was ideal, especially as we only started planning the wedding about eight months in advance.
The church was also one of the first things we arranged. We married at St. Andrew's Church in Horbling as it is my old parish church and we still have close family ties with the village.
Any differing ideas about how your big day should be or things you both wanted to do different?
Groom's View: There really wasn't anything that we wanted to do differently. We were just keen to work together to make the day as special as possible!
Was planning your big day fraught or enjoyable? Did you both contribute ideas with equal enthusiasm?
Groom's View: Planning the wedding wasn't too stressful at all, even with time against us! We started planning early and tried to get as much in place as soon as we could.
I'm an architect so my job involves a lot of planning - very useful for organising a wedding - and I have my own practice, which meant I was able to make a lot of the arrangements around my work. I took control of most of the bookings, and Zoë was in charge of décor, colour schemes and that kind of thing!
Can you describe your dress?
Bride's View: I found my dress at White Dresses and Tiaras which is close to where we live in Surrey. It was an 'A' Line gown with a fitted bodice and crystallised embellishment, I really fell in love with it the moment I set eyes on it!
Any pre-wedding nerves?
Bride's View: I was actually really relaxed, which is surprising considering I'd had a fear of 'freezing-up' in front of all the guests walking down the aisle! Maybe it was the champagne that calmed my nerves!
Groom's View: Yes, but it was a more a case of being nervous about everyone making it to the wedding! A lot of our friends were coming up from down South and some of them are known for being a bit unreliable so we were worried that they wouldn't find the church, or arrive on time!
How did it feel to walk down the aisle and take your vows?
After all the build-up, it was an extremely moving moment and exactly how we imagined it would be.
Who did you choose as attendants?
Bride's View: Clare Young and Alexis Redman were our wonderful bridesmaids.
Groom's View: My best man was Piers Cracknell. We've been best friends since we were 11 so he was definitely the man for the job! My brother, Christopher Daubney and a good pal from my university days - Richard Bonney - were our excellent Ushers.
Where was your reception held?
Our reception was held at Stoke Rochford Hall near Grantham. It was beautiful. A lot of our guests said that it was one of the best weddings they've ever been to soyou really can't ask for more than that!
Did anything funny or particularly memorable happen, highlights of speeches, special things you said to each other etc?
Groom's View: There was a particularly funny moment during the ceremony!
I'd rather foolishly left the labels on the bottom of my new shoes - the entire congregation could see them and had a good chuckle at my expense!
The speeches were another highlight, Piers overran his allocated time slot by about an hour.
He'd spent a long time fine tuning his speech on his trip over from Australia and had even created a power point presentation with lots of funny pictures and plenty of his surreal humour!
Did you have a honeymoon? If so where, and most importantly, did you enjoy it?
Our honeymoon was spent on the Costa Smeralda in Sardinia. It was lovely.
Any friends or family you'd like to thank or recognise?
Paula Hill and Antionette Daubney, our mothers, were obviously a great help in the run up to the wedding and on the day itself - especially Antoinette for all the hard work ferrying and setting up flowers.
Particular thanks also to Aina and Eckhard Oster for help with setting up the tables for the wedding breakfast.
Finally, thanks to Cathy Daubney, who very kindly made the beautiful cake for us.
Anyone you particularly want to recommend?
Yes, everything was absolutely fantastic! For starters, our florist, Fran at Flowers by Suzanne, made some beautiful arrangements.
The bridal party had their hair styled by Helen Richards of Decrew Hairdressing who did a superb job. Trudi's Wedding Hire also made a fantastic job of the chair covers. We had a harpist at the reception, Ruby Paul from York, and she was wonderful too. Zoë was particularly impressed with her dress supplier, White Dresses & Tiaras, which is based down in West Sussex.
Finally, Reg Moore photography also did an amazing job creating all the pictures... we've some beautiful images that really will preserve our memories and last a lifetime!
How are you finding married life?
We're very much enjoying married life. We've just planned a skiing holiday so we are both looking forward to some well-deserved quality time away together.
