This month, red hot Chile vetter Ben Straw of Lincoln’s Steep Hill Wines celebrates the understated country of Chile, home to some of the best value new world wines around, straight from the scorching desert to the somewhat less balmy climes of Lincolnshire...

Chile is a land of extremes from the soaring peaks of the Andes to the scorching heat of the Atacama Desert.
Nestled in the midst of this is Santiago, the capital. In the surrounding lands there is a wine industry that has become renowned for quality and value for money. Chile has managed to
perfect the production of many grape varieties with Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Syrah and the indigenous Carmenere doing exceptionally well.
Here, we present a Chilean manifesto of great ambassadorial wines.
1. Casas del Bosque Sauvignon Blanc Reserva - £8.50
Conceived in 1993 to be a family boutique winery exclusively oriented to the production of high quality wines, Casas del Bosque is recognised as a Sauvignon Blanc specialist. This Sauvignon is aged for two months on its lees to impart a richer texture to the wine. Intense notes of lime and grapefruit dominate on the nose leading to pure flavours of nectarine and white peach in the mouth. A bright, zesty acidity imparts excellent structure and length.
2. Carmen Pinot Noir Reserva - £8.95
The grapes for this example were handpicked from their estate vineyards located in Casablanca Valley. Intense in colour this Pinot has ripe and concentrated strawberry jam, violets and floral aromas. It is medium weight and properly balanced wine, which mixes attractive fruit with barrel toast and firm tannins, resulting in a long and soft finish.
3. Viña Errazuriz Maximiano Founder’s Reserve - £36.50
Don Maximiano Errázuriz founded Viña Errázuriz in 1870 in the Valle de Aconcagua. He recognised that this valley, with its cool, rainy winters, hot, dry summers and moist Pacific Ocean breezes, was ideal for growing grapes. Today, the tradition of quality lives on with Don Maximiano’s descendant, Eduardo Chadwick.
Broad range of aromas that denote tremendous complexity, featuring cherry, cassis, and raspberry with subtler notes of redcurrant, tobacco, and hazelnuts.
4. Casas del Bosque Pinot Noir Gran Reserva - £12.25
Hand harvested from the Casablanca Valley and aged in French oak barrels (40% of which were new) for 14 months and then carefully aged for three months in our cellar prior to release this is a beautiful Pinot Noir.
Intense aromas of red cherry, citrus peel and fresh ginger dominate. In the mouth lashings of strawberry, cinnamon and nutmeg give way to an underlying note of damp earth.
5. Carmen Gewurztraminer Reserva - £8.95
Carmen was founded in 1850 by Christian Lanz, who named the winery in honour of his beloved wife Carmen. This is a beautiful, spicy and yet seductively sweet wine. The silt clay soils allows a nice concentration of flavours and aromas, while the cool climate of the valley contributes to the grapes superb natural acidity. Shows intense fresh citrus fruit and floral aromas of rose petals and lychee with some white pepper and mineral hints.
