Lincolnshire Food and Wine

Written by Ben Straw on 19th July 2011

Ben Straw of Steep Hill Wines introduces us to his friends in the north — the North of Italy — with a personal favourite of our wine buff! Michele Chiarlo is an artisan producer established in the 1980s. Here we find out how he and his team produce wines of such astonishing quality!

1 ‘Cerequio’ Barolo DOCG - £55.95

Cerequio is to be found on a splendid, south-facing amphitheatre hill and is one of most prestigious crus throughout the entire Barolo production area. Ample, generous and intense with great complexity and balance. Hints of blackcurrant, apricot, cherry, and spices. A rich full body and an elegant, lingering finish.

2 ‘Rovereto’ Gavi di Gavi DOCG - £16.95

This is made from 100% Cortese from the Rovereto vineyard in Gavi. The Rovereto district is universally recognised as the finest convergence of microclimate and soil for the production of outstanding Gavi.A crisp, fresh wine with distinctive mineral streak on the palate. Excellent on release but thanks to its astonishing minerality it can age up to five years.

3 ‘Airone’ Monferatto DOC - £15.25

A unique blend of 50% Barbera, 30% Cabernet and 20% Shiraz to make an internationally pleasing style of wine. Full of chocolate flavours with rich textured with smooth tannins.

4 ‘Tortoniano’ Barolo DOCG - £34.95

Barolo is indeed one of the world’s greatest wines. “Tortoniano” is named after the local geological area. The Tortoniano soil gives rise to a Barolo of exceptional elegance. Generous, engaging and complex, the palate is full-bodied and harmonious with hints of almonds, juniper and anise. Best from 3-4 years, it ages well up to 15-18 years; in good vintages it will age gracefully up to 20 years.

5 ‘La Court’ Barbera d’Asti Superiore DOCG - £37.25

La Court is the first wine ever made by Michele. Made from 100% Barbera, this is fermented in both small French oak barrels and in barriques for 12 months. It then sees a further 18 months maturation in bottle before release. The palate shows a wonderful balance of wild berry fruit and hints of smoke and tobacco. Wonderful after three years; it can age up to 10-12 years.
