Lincolnshire Wine: Shiraz-amatazz

Written by Ben Straw on 16th May 2011

Juicy, opulent and perfect for summer evenings. This month we celebrate the illustrious Shiraz varietal, used to create massive wines with strength, lots of big, bold, juicy flavours and a touch of spice too. Ben Straw of Lincoln’s Steep Hill Wines this month encourages you to experience the razamatazz of the almighty Shiraz!

Lincolnshire Wines.

The Shiraz grape is a robust varietal that is suited to warmer climates than some of it’s more delicate siblings. From this thick-skinned black grape comes a beautiful spectrum of wines from the full, fruit-forward Shiraz from the Barossa Valley in South East Australia to the subtler, more elegant Syrah of the Northern Rhone.

Shiraz/Syrah is an excellent wine for blending; with it often seen in partnership with Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier, Grenache and Mourvedre amongst others. Probably the most well-known of the Shiraz blends is from the Rhone: Châteauneuf-du-Pape – where Shiraz is blended with Grenache and Mourvedre.

On its own, the Shiraz grape creates full-bodied, dry, red wines with levels of acidity and tannin that can be quite high (although correctly managed this can be a great help in ageing). They show great fruit character tending towards darker fruit flavours and a stereotypical hint of spice to the palate.

1 Viña Echeverria Syrah Reserva, Chile - £10.75

A highly aromatic Syrah from the family run winery at Echeverria; this shows aromas of blackberries, blueberries and raspberries. Hints of bitter chocolate combine nicely with notes of black pepper, cinnamon and tobacco. A well balanced and round mouthful, with a juicy and long lasting finish.

2 Vidal Syrah, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand - £13.99

Grown on the Gimblett Gravels in Hawkes Bay this Syrah is beautifully scented with violets, white pepper and blackberry on the nose. The palate is richly fruity, supple and mouth-filling with a creamy ripe texture, smooth tannins and a hint of spice on the finish.

3 Grant Burge Old Vine Shiraz, Barossa, Australia - £21.99

The Filsell is one of Grant Burge’s, and for that matter the Barossa’s, greatest vineyards. The Shiraz vines are approaching their centenary year and it shows in this intense and full-flavoured wine. A hugely powerful, big and mouth-filling wine that just coats the mouth. Fleshy blackberry and blackcurrant fruit is framed by tightly grained tannins, touches of creaminess and subtle vanilla oak. A stunning example of Australian Shiraz that will cellar up to ten years.

4 Coriole Lloyd Reserve Shiraz, McLaren Vale, Australia - £30.95

The Lloyd Reserve Shiraz is produced from a single vineyard at Coriole. The vines were originally planted in 1919 by Geoffrey Kay. First used as a separate wine in 1989, the wine is matured in about 40% new French. The nose displays cassis, berry, plums and a hint of earthiness. The palate is full and round with notes of pepper, leather and earth. This is a tight and structurally robust wine with even tannins and length. Cellar confidently for up to 15-20 years.

5 Georges Vernay Côte-Rôtie ‘Blonde du Seigneur’ 2005, Rhone, France - £37.95

Vigneronne Christine Vernay's father Georges was instrumental in keeping the Condrieu appellation from extinction in the 1960s. Christine Vernay took over winemaking responsibilities here in 1997. Domaine Georges Vernay is widely regarded as being among the very best sources of both Condrieu and Côte Rôtie.
