Raise a glass this season and celebrate the New Year with some of the finest fizz in the cellars of Lincoln’s Steep Hill Wines. Expert Ben Straw toasts low-cost, quirky world-wide sparkling wines to get your dinner party or reception off to a swing!

CHAMPAGNE is synonymous with top quality sparkling wine, but today I intend to prove that there are plenty of other countries and producers who do fizz just as well as the Champenois.
Sparkling wine falls into two broad categories; the Champagne clones - Champagne in all but name - and the rest. The latter broad category covers all sparkling wines that are uniquely individual and carry a lot of their character from the grape varieties and their country of origin; think Prosecco or Cava.
The producers of worldwide sparkling wines make their wines either in line with Champagne's traditional method, - a secondary fermentation and ageing in bottle - or via the Charmat or tank method. This involves the secondary fermentation being carried out in bulk before bottling. Here are a few recommendations to show what the rest of the world can do!
1 Nyetimber Classic Cuvée - £27.50 The gold standard of English sparkling wine. Classic Cuvée is the signature style from Nyetimber. Has aromas of peaches and apricots with a hint of ginger and vanilla. The palate is intensely flavoursome and delicate bubbles fill the mouth. Flavours of roasted almonds and baked peach linger on a long and fresh finish.
2 Vina Calappiano Prosecco DOC Extra Dry - £10.95 The Sensi family has been making wine in Tuscany since 1890. In 1995 they purchased the fifteenth century Villa Calappiano property and vineyards, located close to the town of Vinci. This wine is marvellously floral on the nose, with distinct fruity nuances of apple and white peach. Fresh, clean flavour, with a perfect balance between acidity and sweetness. A persistent, soft, mouth filling mousse.
3 Leconfield Syn Rouge - £11.25 The Leconfield Coonawarra estate was established in 1974 by pioneering oenologist Sydney Hamilton. Bright, fresh, vibrant raspberry aromas lead to a beautifully balanced, creamy palate of lively raspberry and cherry flavours that finishes with a soft and cleansing acidity. Made with Coonawarra Shiraz in a fine, elegant style and matured in oak. Secondary fermentation has provided natural effervescence and the wine has been liqueured to give a creamy palate. 2% vintage port was blended in the liqueur to the wine to provide complexity.
4 Collalto Rosé - £13.75 Made from Manzoni Moscato, a crossing of one of the many Muscat varietals, this delicate pink fizz has a delicate, long-lasting bead. Intensely fragrant, releasing scents of rose petal and lime blossom. Has an emphatic, long- lingering distinctiveness and a palate that is dry and quite refreshing, with an aroma-laden finish that seems endless.
5 Domaine Carneros Brut Cuvée 2006 - £19.99 From California this Chardonnay Pinot Noir blend is created in partnership with Champagne Taittinger. The Domaine Carneros château is a landmark of the Carneros region, and is inspired by the historic Taittinger-owned Château de la Marquetterie in Champagne. Vintage dated each year; the Domaine Carneros Brut Cuvée represents the best of Carneros Pinot Noir and Chardonnay made into a classic sparkling wine.
