Porsche’s best-selling SUV has gone fully electric for the first time. Our motoring editor Rob Davis gets behind the wheel of the new Cayenne Electric<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cayenne and its smaller sibling, the Macan, each sell around 80,000 examples every year. By comparison, the iconic 911 sells roughly 50,000 units annually, while the Panamera, Taycan and 718 Boxster and Cayman each account for around 20,000 sales apiece. So the Cayenne is a very big deal for Porsche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it first arrived in 2002, the Cayenne was a genuinely controversial vehicle. Critics mocked the idea of a family-sized SUV wearing the famous Stuttgart badge, arguing there was no place for it among Porsche’s sports cars. Things have changed a great deal since then, and in fact the Cayenne has become one of the most important cars Porsche has ever built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The success of the smaller Macan since has given Porsche the confidence to move the Cayenne further upmarket. Luxury SUVs such as the Range Rover have comfortably moved beyond six-figure price tags, while rivals including the Aston Martin DBX, Bentley Bentayga and Land Rover Defender Octa have demonstrated that buyers are willing to spend serious money on performance-focused luxury SUVs. That has allowed Porsche to make the Cayenne larger, more luxurious and more expensive than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Going Fully Electric<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The move to electrification is another reason why Porsche had to get the new Cayenne exactly right. Previous generations have been offered with petrol and hybrid powertrains, but this is the first Cayenne designed from the outset as a fully electric model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prices begin at \u00a383,200 for the Cayenne Electric, while the Cayenne Electric Coup\u00e9 starts at \u00a386,200. There are three versions available. The standard Cayenne Electric produces up to 442PS with Launch Control and develops 835Nm of torque, reaching 60mph in 4.8 seconds and continuing to a top speed of 143mph, with range up to 399 miles. The S Electric reduces the 0-60mph sprint to 3.8 seconds, while the astonishing Turbo Electric completes the same benchmark in just 2.5 seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Personally, our reviewer would save the extra money and choose the standard SUV rather than the S or Turbo, and put some of that cash towards personalisation instead \u2014 Porsche offers an almost endless selection of colours, trims, wheels and interior finishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Charging and Technology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rapid charging allows the battery to go from ten to eighty per cent in just 16 minutes at suitably powerful charging stations. Porsche is even developing a wireless charging system that will allow owners to simply drive over a charging pad in their garage to begin charging automatically \u2014 a small but telling sign of how seriously the company is taking day-to-day usability alongside performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fit and finish is class-leading throughout, and the standard car comes lavishly equipped with adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera and digital tech galore. All-wheel drive is standard across the range, and practicality has not been forgotten \u2014 the Cayenne can tow up to 3,500kg, making it ideal for horseboxes, boats and trailers. Inside, occupants enjoy leather seats, heated front seats, adaptive air suspension, ambient lighting with thirty colour choices, soft-close doors, keyless entry, a power tailgate with gesture control and a ten-speaker audio system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

None of that comes as a surprise from Porsche, but it’s worth remembering how far the segment has come. A decade and a half ago, this level of standard equipment on a mid-size luxury SUV would have been unusual even as an option. Today it’s simply expected, and the Cayenne Electric delivers it without feeling like it has cut any corners to make the switch to a fully electric powertrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Verdict<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It is already a handsome and well-proportioned vehicle, offering greater practicality and versatility than ever, and both the standard and higher-performance versions are undeniably attractive while benefiting from Porsche’s trademark attention to detail. Add impressive refinement and genuine Porsche handling, and the result is an electric SUV that proves the future can still be exciting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For buyers cross-shopping the luxury electric SUV class, the Cayenne Electric’s case rests on exactly the combination Porsche has spent two decades building: genuine driver engagement alongside everyday practicality. Whether that’s worth the premium over rivals will come down to personal taste \u2014 but on the evidence of this first drive, Porsche has once again made a strong argument for why the badge still matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
