The pinstriped suit worn by Professor Sir Jonathan Van-Tam during the Downing Street Covid-19 briefings has been donated to Boston Guildhall Museum, bringing a piece of modern national history back to the town where his story began.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

An unmistakable piece of Britain’s recent history has found a new home in Boston. Professor Sir Jonathan Van-Tam – known to millions simply as JVT – has donated the pinstriped suit he wore during a number of the Government’s Covid-19 press briefings to Boston Guildhall Museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The donation also includes a tie worn during the televised briefings and one of his much-loved Boston United ties, bringing together the two sides of a man who became a national figure without ever losing sight of his Lincolnshire roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many people, the suit will bring back immediate memories of an extraordinary and often unsettling period. As Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England, JVT regularly stood before the Downing Street lectern to explain infection rates, restrictions and the development of vaccines. His direct manner, reassuring delivery and gift for using everyday comparisons made complex science easier for millions to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A personal gift to his hometown<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The suit may have been seen on television screens across the country, but its new home has a deeply personal significance. JVT visited the Guildhall Museum while growing up in Boston and still remembers exploring its historic cells as a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the handover, he recalled: “I remember coming to the museum whilst growing up in the town and going into the cells.” With the suit now at the end of its working life, he wanted it to return to Boston as an object connected both to his own story and to that of his hometown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The museum is developing a series of displays celebrating famous Bostonians, and the newly donated items are expected to feature in that series over the coming months. The collection will preserve not only the borough’s distant past, but also the people and events that have shaped its more recent history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Boston to Downing Street<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jonathan Van-Tam was born and raised in Boston and attended Boston Grammar School before studying medicine at the University of Nottingham. After five years in hospital-based clinical medicine, he moved into public health and epidemiology, developing particular expertise in influenza, vaccines, pandemic preparedness and respiratory viruses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His career took him through academia, the pharmaceutical sector and senior public-health roles. He returned to the public sector in 2004 and later became Professor of Health Protection at the University of Nottingham. In October 2017 he was appointed Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England, a role he held until March 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Lincolnshire Pride interviewed JVT in 2020, he spoke about the rapid change from the relative calm of academic life to becoming one of the country’s most recognisable medical advisers. His principle, he told us, was to remain honest and objective and to “speak the truth to power.” It was an approach that helped earn him respect well beyond the world of medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Pilgrim at heart<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even at the height of the pandemic, Boston was never far from JVT’s thoughts. A devoted Boston United supporter, he wore a club tie during a national press briefing in May 2020, prompting a flurry of interest and giving the Pilgrims an unexpected moment in the national spotlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Football also found its way into his memorable explanations. JVT often used sporting comparisons to describe the progress of the pandemic and the development of vaccines – a natural choice for someone whose affection for Boston United was already well known locally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inclusion of one of his Boston United ties makes the museum donation especially appropriate. Beside the formal suit associated with public duty is a reminder of the supporter, the Bostonian and the familiar local figure behind the national profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preserving tomorrow’s history<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

JVT was knighted in the 2022 New Year Honours for services to public health and was also awarded the Freedom of the Borough of Boston in recognition of his achievements and his contribution during the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Councillor Sarah Sharpe, Portfolio Holder for Heritage, Culture and Tourism, said the museum was grateful for the generous donation. She explained that preserving contemporary history is just as important as celebrating the town’s heritage stretching back more than a thousand years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is what makes this donation so compelling. The suit is at once an item of clothing, a symbol of a defining national crisis and a chapter in the life of one of Boston’s best-known sons. For future visitors to the Guildhall, it will tell the story of how a boy who once explored the museum’s cells grew up to guide a nation – before sending a little piece of that remarkable journey home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
