{"id":2233,"date":"2018-03-19T15:40:53","date_gmt":"2018-03-19T15:40:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pridemagazines.co.uk\/stamford\/?p=66"},"modified":"2018-03-19T15:40:53","modified_gmt":"2018-03-19T15:40:53","slug":"historic-stamford","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pridemagazines.co.uk\/rutland-and-stamford\/highlights\/historic-stamford\/03-2018","title":{"rendered":"HISTORIC STAMFORD"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 42\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><strong>Georgian Stamford has a wealth of historic buildings<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 42\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Georgian Stamford was made the UK\u2019s first Conservation Area 50 years ago, and has over 600 listed buildings &#8211; more than half of those in Lincolnshire.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Its well-preserved Georgian character has ensured it has been the go-to filming location for Georgian-era TV and film productions from Middlemarch to Pride &amp; Prejudice.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Only one wall remains of what was the town\u2019s castle, created in the Norman era in the area of land between the Welland Valley and Sheepmarket. The castle was a motte and bailey construction, created on the grounds of five houses and occupied twice during the civil wars of the mid-C12th.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 42\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>The building deteriorated from 1300-1600, and its remains were levelled in the 1930s to create the bus station and car park.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 42\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Stamford\u2019s Civic Society has assisted in the upkeep of St Leonard\u2019s Priory off Uffington Road, creating benches, interpretation and planting spring bulbs for visitors to enjoy. The building\u2019s C12th architectural arches are a feature, as is the new west front, rebuilt in 1833 by the 2nd Marquess of Exeter.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 42\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Stamford\u2019s other historic treat is Browne\u2019s Hospital, founded by the wool merchant William Browne and now almshouses home to 13 residents.
