The A1 is located roughly on the site of the Roman Great North Road. It\u2019s thought that the presence of gallows would deter would-be highwaymen like Dick Turpin, and Tom King, who menaced travellers and declared \u2018your money or your life!\u2019 At that time, travelling\u00a0from York to London took no fewer than\u00a0four days.
