We knew what we wanted to create,” says owner Amanda Clayton. “All we’ve done over the past 13 years is to be faithful to our original intention.”

A favourite, by popular vote

The pub’s popularity was recently confirmed when it was crowned Rutland and Stamford’s Favourite Pub. The one-off competition, launched by MP Alicia Kearns to celebrate the part pubs play in village and town life, attracted almost 2,500 responses from residents across the constituency. The Griffin Inn at Irnham and The Green Dragon in Ryhall were named joint runners-up.

Amanda is quick to credit her team: general manager Gemma Moore, four chefs and three kitchen assistants. “We’re a passionate team, and we enjoy what we do,” she says. “We’re grateful for our recent award, but we’re never complacent and we’ll never take our success for granted. We want every diner to have a great experience, every time.”

A village pub with a very good restaurant

The Woodhouse Arms is a village pub for locals, with open fires, beams, pine floors and bags of character, but it is also a very good restaurant for those coming from further afield. Friends often use it as a meeting point, travelling from Grantham, Bourne, Peterborough, Stamford and Rutland.

Three letting rooms are popular too, even with local diners who’d rather not rely on a taxi home. At £140, including bed, breakfast and a main course at dinner, they make an easy break without travelling far.

On the menu

The main menu is served at lunchtime and in the evening from Wednesday to Sunday, with ciabattas and sandwiches at lunch and a dedicated Sunday lunch menu (it’s a very popular destination for a Sunday roast). There’s a choice of seven starters, 12 main courses and seven desserts.

Bread, the shortbread served with coffee, and all desserts and sauces are made in-house. Local suppliers include butchers Owen Taylor and Mel Ward and Collins Fresh for vegetables, while fish landed at Grimsby docks is delivered daily. The sausages are a highlight, made by John Berry of Grimsthorpe to his own recipe.

Starters include smoked haddock fishcakes with hollandaise and watercress (£8.95), a chorizo and Parmesan Scotch egg (£9.25) and rosemary and honey infused Camembert to share (£18.95). Mains include chicken en croute with mushroom duxelles, creamy mash, fine beans and grain mustard (£19.75), an 8oz bavette steak with hand-cut chips and onion rings (£28.95) and a 6oz beef brisket burger (£18.25). To finish, try poached pear with vanilla brûlée and caramelised hazelnuts (£8.50), pecan pie with caramel ice cream (£8.75) or toffee apple crumble (£8.85).
