Duckworth Motor Group: Over 60 Years of Land Rover Heritage in Lincolnshire

From a village garage founded by a father and son to one of the region’s best-known automotive businesses, Duckworth Motor Group has served motorists for more than 60 years. Today, the family-owned company represents some of Britain’s most prestigious and capable vehicles, including Range Rover, Defender and Discovery.

Few vehicles seem more at home in Lincolnshire, Rutland or the countryside around Stamford than a Land Rover.

Equally capable of negotiating a muddy field, towing a horsebox or transporting a family in first-class comfort, Land Rover vehicles have become a familiar sight throughout our rural communities. Their combination of practicality, capability and understated British luxury has made them enduringly popular with farmers, business owners, country families and drivers simply seeking a vehicle in which every journey feels special.

It is a heritage with which Duckworth Motor Group has been closely associated for more than four decades as an official Land Rover retailer—and for more than 60 years as a trusted Lincolnshire family business.

How the original Land Rover was created

The Land Rover story began in the years immediately after the Second World War.

Inspired by the rugged American Willys-Overland Jeep, Rover’s technical director Maurice Wilks and his brother Spencer, the company’s managing director, recognised the potential for a similarly robust British vehicle.

Their idea was to create an all-purpose machine that could be driven comfortably on the road but would also help farmers, engineers and the armed forces cross difficult terrain. It needed to be simple, dependable and exceptionally capable.

The first experimental Land Rover was created in 1947. Its unusual central driving position led to it becoming known as the Centre Steer prototype.

A production-ready Land Rover was unveiled at the Amsterdam Motor Show in April 1948. Among the earliest pre-production examples was HUE 166, affectionately known as “Huey,” which is now preserved as an important part of British motoring history.

The original Land Rover was built to work. Its short wheelbase, four-wheel-drive system and practical body made it ideal for agricultural and military use, but its appeal soon extended far beyond those original markets.

It became a vehicle for explorers, emergency services, conservation organisations and generations of rural families. Land Rovers have crossed deserts, climbed mountains and reached some of the world’s most remote communities.

From Series I to the modern Defender

The Land Rover continued to evolve through the Series I, Series II and Series III before the introduction of the Land Rover 90 and 110 during the 1980s.

In 1990, these famously capable vehicles adopted the Defender name.

Today’s Defender is a thoroughly modern interpretation of the original idea. It retains the strength, durability and all-terrain ability for which the marque became famous, but combines them with contemporary technology, refined interiors and a much greater degree of everyday comfort.

The Defender range includes the compact three-door Defender 90, the versatile five-door Defender 110 and the spacious Defender 130. Commercial Hard Top versions are also available for customers who need a serious working vehicle with a substantial and secure load area.

Depending on the model, buyers can choose from petrol, diesel and electric-hybrid powertrains, with advanced all-wheel drive and Terrain Response technology helping the Defender negotiate challenging surfaces.

Modern versions may be more luxurious than their predecessors, but the essential character remains familiar: tough, distinctive and ready for almost anything.

Duckworth Motor Group: a Lincolnshire family business since 1962

The Duckworth family’s engineering story began in 1952, when precision engineer James Duckworth relocated from Sheffield to Lincolnshire.

James’s son Martin shared his father’s practical ability but was especially interested in motor vehicles. From the age of 12, Martin spent weekends and school holidays working at a vehicle repair and servicing garage in Lincoln.

In 1962, when Martin left school at the age of 16, father and son established their own village garage and engineering business in Ingham.

It was the beginning of Duckworth Motor Group.

As Land Rovers became increasingly popular with Lincolnshire’s agricultural community, they also began to account for a growing proportion of the family garage’s work. Martin admired the vehicles and understood their suitability for the county’s farms, rural roads and demanding working environments.

In 1978, he began writing to Land Rover in the hope of securing an official franchise. His determination was rewarded in 1980, when Duckworth became an authorised Land Rover retailer.

A larger home was required, with sufficient space for a showroom, workshop and parts department. Martin found a derelict workshop on Willingham Road in Market Rasen and set about transforming it.

That site remains the home of Duckworth Land Rover Market Rasen today.

Growing Duckworth Land Rover in Market Rasen and Boston

Martin’s eldest son Ben joined the family company in 2002 after completing an apprenticeship with Land Rover UK, gaining an HND in Motor Manufacturing and spending seven years working across several departments and projects at the Land Rover factory.

In 2007, Ben became Dealer Principal and expanded the business by opening a second official Land Rover retailer near Boston.

Today, Duckworth Land Rover Boston occupies an impressive purpose-built centre on Avalon Road at Kirton. The £7 million facility covers 50,000 sq ft and incorporates an 18-vehicle showroom, workshop, parts department, customer lounge, meeting rooms and barista bar.

The building’s 200kW roof-mounted solar installation reflects the motor industry’s transition towards electric and electric-hybrid vehicles. Charging points are available across the site, while customers can make use of hot desks and meeting rooms if they need to continue working while their vehicle is being serviced.

It is even dog-friendly—an appropriate touch for a business serving customers throughout rural Lincolnshire.

Despite its growth, Duckworth has remained a family-owned and family-run company. Its reputation has been built not only on the vehicles it sells, but on integrity, local knowledge and a commitment to looking after customers throughout their ownership journey.

Martin Duckworth died in August 2025, leaving behind a significant legacy as an engineer, entrepreneur, mentor and highly respected figure within the Lincolnshire business community.

His principles continue to shape the company today.

A new chapter for Duckworth Motor Group

In June 2026, Duckworth Motor Group began another important chapter with the acquisition of the official Jaguar Land Rover franchise in Norwich.

The Maple Way site at Postwick became Duckworth Jaguar Land Rover Norwich on 5 June, joining the company’s established Land Rover retailers in Boston and Market Rasen.

The Norwich dealership offers new, used, fleet and business Land Rover vehicles, approved used Jaguar models and comprehensive servicing and aftersales support for both marques.

The acquisition has extended the company’s presence into East Anglia while preserving the family ownership and personal approach that have defined Duckworth since 1962.

Duckworth Motor Group now employs more than 150 people across its three principal sites.

Range Rover: British luxury with all-terrain capability

Land Rover’s most significant transformation began in 1970 with the introduction of the original Range Rover.

It offered something genuinely new: the comfort and refinement of a luxury car combined with the strength and off-road capability of a Land Rover.

More than half a century later, Range Rover remains synonymous with first-class travel. Its calm, beautifully finished interiors, commanding driving position and effortless performance have made it one of Britain’s most desirable luxury vehicles.

The flagship Range Rover is available in standard and long-wheelbase forms, with seating configurations suitable for both executive travel and family life.

Range Rover Sport offers a more dynamic interpretation, combining luxury with sharper handling and powerful performance. For drivers seeking something more compact, the Range Rover Velar offers sophisticated design and excellent road manners, while the Range Rover Evoque provides Range Rover character in a city-friendly package.

Electric-hybrid options are available throughout the Range Rover family, offering near-silent electric driving for shorter journeys alongside the flexibility of a petrol engine for longer distances.

The forthcoming fully electric Range Rover will take the marque into a new era, retaining its familiar design, refinement and capability while introducing zero-tailpipe-emission motoring.

Discovery: versatile vehicles for family life

Discovery has always represented the practical and versatile side of the Land Rover family.

The full-size Discovery is a genuine seven-seat SUV, offering generous space for passengers and luggage while retaining formidable towing and all-terrain capability.

It is equally suited to the school run, long-distance family travel, equestrian life or a weekend exploring the countryside.

Discovery Sport packages much of that versatility into a more compact vehicle. Available with five or seven seats depending on specification, it is designed for drivers who require everyday practicality without moving to a full-size SUV.

Petrol, diesel and plug-in electric-hybrid options allow customers to select the powertrain most appropriate for their lifestyle and typical journeys.

New and approved used Land Rovers in Lincolnshire

For anyone looking for a new or approved used Land Rover in Lincolnshire, Duckworth Motor Group offers access to the complete Defender, Discovery and Range Rover families.

Its teams in Boston and Market Rasen can advise on vehicle choice, specification, finance and part exchange, helping customers identify the model that best suits their requirements.

That might be a Defender Hard Top for business use, a seven-seat Discovery for a growing family, a compact Range Rover Evoque or the exceptional comfort of a full-size Range Rover.

Duckworth also provides a selection of approved used Land Rover vehicles. Each offers the opportunity to enjoy the marque’s capability and prestige with the additional reassurance associated with purchasing through an established official retailer.

Duckworth Select in Kirton complements the franchise businesses with a wider choice of quality used cars and commercial vehicles from a variety of manufacturers. The Boston operation also represents Isuzu, Omoda and Jaecoo.

Land Rover servicing, MOTs and repairs

Duckworth’s relationship with its customers extends well beyond the original vehicle purchase.

Manufacturer-trained technicians provide routine servicing, MOT testing, diagnostics, repairs and access to genuine parts and accessories. Bodywork and cosmetic repairs are also available, helping owners maintain the condition and value of their vehicles.

For customers in Lincolnshire, Rutland, Stamford and the surrounding area, using an established official retailer also provides access to technicians familiar with the latest vehicle technology, from advanced all-wheel-drive systems to electric-hybrid powertrains.

Whether a vehicle spends its life on motorways, country lanes, building sites or farmland, regular specialist maintenance helps to preserve its safety, reliability and performance.

A trusted name for drivers across Lincolnshire, Rutland and Stamford

More than 60 years after James and Martin Duckworth opened their village garage, the business still reflects the qualities on which it was founded: engineering knowledge, hard work and personal service.

Its scale may have changed dramatically, but Duckworth Motor Group remains rooted in the communities it serves.

For Lincolnshire customers, its Boston and Market Rasen dealerships provide established local destinations for new and used Range Rover, Defender and Discovery vehicles. For drivers from Rutland, Stamford and the wider East Midlands, the group offers the reassurance of a long-established family business combined with the facilities and technical expertise of an official Land Rover retailer.

Land Rover itself has changed almost beyond recognition since the first vehicle appeared in 1948. What began as a simple agricultural machine has grown into a family of globally recognised luxury and all-terrain vehicles.

Yet the essential appeal remains: confidence, character and the ability to make almost any journey feel possible.

Those same enduring qualities have helped Duckworth Motor Group grow from a father-and-son garage into one of the region’s most respected automotive names.
